Don’t Create Any More WLANs than Absolutely Needed

By Bill Carr ·

We frequently discuss with customer’s the importance of not creating “SSID sprawl”.  Don’t create any more WLANs than you absolutely need. In today’s world, there should really only be a need for about a maximum of three ESSIDs.

1. 802.1X Secured with WPA2 – For Employee Secure access

2. A PSK network for devices that do not support 802.1X.

3 . An optional Open Guest network.

This great calculator by Andrew Nagy will give a good understanding of the overhead the additional ESSIDs create in your environment and how they steal a WLAN’s most precious resource, airtime.!
